How to Get the Most Out of Your Chiropractic Visit

by | Nov 30, 2023

We’d like to think that our patients are getting the absolute most out of their chiropractic visits. But in order to meet this hefty goal, there are some things that you’ll need to do to maximize the results from your chiropractic appointments. It is estimated that around 70 MILLION adults are living with some chronic pain here in the U.S. This, without a doubt (as you may well know), can have an impact on someone’s quality of life, hobbies, habits and health. Once there is a loss of independence, it can really impact social, emotional and mental health!

There are also some folks who will turn to over-the-counter pain medications to deal with their chronic pain. Even those that are promised instant relief find themselves still grappling with the pain that has already taken so much from them. Pain relievers only mask pain and they can cause their own health issues when used for too long.

What is the goal of most chiropractors?

The goal of chiropractic care is to restore normal joint function, realign the spine, and reduce pain and discomfort so the patient can live a more fulfilling life. That is where a chiropractor trained in healing the body comes in. When we first meet at your chiropractic visit, our staff will assess the issues you’re having and help you come up with an individualized plan to get to the root of the issue and relieve your pain.

What do patients need to do to get the most out of their chiropractic visit?

1. Be consistent and schedule regular chiropractic visits.

Many of our patients think they can stop coming in for appointments when they first start to see or feel an improvement. Accomplishing the complete goal takes time and will require regular chiropractic services to meet it. Plus, regular chiropractic care over time can support natural recovery processes, reduce digestive problems, strengthen the immune system, and improve balance, flexibility and function.

2. Stay hydrated before and after your chiropractic visit.

Drinking lots of water before and after your adjustment or other service is super important! It flushes out toxins and waste from the body, acting like a natural detox. It also keeps your joints and discs lubricated – crucial! Drink, drink, drink your water before and after your chiropractic visit! Setting intake goals throughout the day or using a marked water bottle can help. You’ll feel better overall. What a great healthy habit to focus more on!

3. Get more rest on a daily basis.

On average, a healthy adult should be sleeping 7-9 hours each night to function well. During this sleep, our parasympathetic nervous system works and we go through a healing process. We also recommend that you sleep on your right side or your back. Using therapeutic pillows can help keep your spine aligned.

4. Check your posture.

Poor posture can really reduce how effective your spinal adjustments are and can also lead to issues with digestion, poor circulation, reduced lung function and even constricted nerves! When seated, be sure your elbows are bent at 90 degrees as well as your knees. The top of your screen should be at or just below eye level. For every hour you’re sitting at your desk, take a 10-15 minute break to stand and walk.

5. Eat healthy foods.

What we eat impacts our physical and even our mental health. Processed foods and sugary snacks or drinks have empty calories and no health benefits. These unhealthy foods can also cause inflammation which leads to joint pain. This can delay healing – not part of our plan! A balanced diet full of green vegetables, fruits, lean meats, whole grains and low fat dairy can help your body repair and heal.

6. Try to keep an active lifestyle.

Do the stretches that we recommend to you and remember that motion is lotion, helping to improve flexibility and strength which will then in turn make those adjustments easier. Exercise and chiropractic care can combine for the ultimate way to prevent injuries.

7. Have an Epsom salt bath after your chiropractic visit.

After an adjustment, Epsom salt can help remove toxins and also lactic acid from your body. It relaxes muscles, relieves tension and helps with pain in the shoulders, neck and back.

8. Ice those muscles.

Putting on ice before and after chiropractic adjustments reduces inflammation, improves circulation and removes toxins. You need recovery and you need certain nutrients to do just that.
